Bearing witness to the despairing loss of his old God friend, Zumi was overwhelmed by grief. Amidst the situation that a mysterious orb appears before Zumi and sent him on a journey to find the lost spirits.


Embark on this heartwarming tale as Zumi discovers hidden secrets and gifts left behind by his friend. Will Zumi be able to fulfil the void that was left behind?  

The Concept

Sense is a linear 2D puzzle platformer that emphasises the use of senses. The 3 senses that the players will be able to unlock are Smell, Sight and Hearing.


The mechanic for each sense is tailored to be an identical function of how each sense would function in reality.

Players would have the use these abilities to find hidden areas or to solve puzzles in order to progress through each level.

Project Details

Team Size of 8

  • 2D Linear Narrative Platformer

  • 8 months

  • Made on GameSense 2D (Custom Engine)

Role: Design Lead & Level Design Champion


Responsibilities:

  • Ensuring that the overall direction and creative vision of the game suit the theme.

  • Ensuring that the puzzles designed are well-suited with the core mechanics.

  • Establishing the core game loop.

  • Planning the design roadmap through various milestones.

  • Designing levels for the game.

  • Assisted in basic gameplay coding.

  • Assisted in integrating art assets.

  • Arranged playtest sessions to garner feedback for improvement.

Level Design Process

For level design, I set up a few design objectives that I need to achieve for the players to clear the stage. We needed to employ the right type of progression to enhance the 5 stages of acceptance present in grief. It also narrowed down to the narrative style and pacing required to deliver the experience.


I start my designs by determining the metrics and sketching the levels to visualise.

Once I am satisfied with the sketches, I will stress test the level to ensure that both the design and player objectives can be achieved with the level. After completing that, I handed the level to the artists to populate the scene.


Like other level designers, I included my own style and twists when designing a level which I have compiled a short document on.
